    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crappy saw regret the purchase A friend of mine recommend this saw to me. I needed something smaller for limbs and cutting smaller trees to compliment my bigger saw. They had me purchase the Stihl mix so I could get a 2 year warranty over the standard 1 year. Got it home excited to get some work done. Ran a tank through it and it was spitting oil out the muffler. Have about 5 tanks through it now and it won't idle. Very frustrating should have did what the reviews said and went with the Echo CS-310. Not to mention they have standard 5 year consumer warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little saw Bought this chainsaw on sale to use for my family's camping trip to cut up driftwood for firewood. It performed perfectly every time I used it. Great saw for your everyday use around the yard and for camping trips as well. Highly recommend it for it's performance and value!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good power for size. I use this saw often. Didn't like it at first, change the factory mini bar to a regular bar and you will have a much better experience with this saw. Perfect for cutting limbs off fallen trees.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw for the price Runs and cuts great have zero issues with the saw and have used it to cut up several 12 to 14 inch logs. Only complaint I have with the saw is that it does not come with any steel logs dogs to help roll the bar through what your cutting and the saw dont bite with just the plastic one made into the housing of the saw

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad for the price. Won this saw in a raffle. I own a redwood burl business and have been running Stihls for 45+ years. I use 090's for my milling.Best saw they ever made!! Got this saw and was told by my local saw shop that this is Stihl's cheap homeowner saw. He told me that they are made in China for Stihl and have a unit cost of $5 each to build. Well, for a free saw that costs $5 to build, it runs pretty good. I have put a couple of dozen tanks of gas thru it working, trimming roots off stumps and trimming table slabs for hours on end. It is under powered, but that is to be expected for such a tiny powerhead. Two things you need to know to make it last. #1 never run it at full throttle for more then a few seconds at a time. This saw will blow up if you run it wide open for any extended period. My saw shop mechanic's advice. #2 I mix my gas a bit rich. The old 090's like a richer mixture compared to the new saws that run on a leaner mix. I use Stihl high performance mix( the orange bottle) and mix 5 gallons at a time. I mix 4.7 gallons of regular 87 octane gas per bottle that normally mixes 5 gallons. This richer low octane mix works fine with my saws. I have old 090's, some of their competition, newer Stihl 046, an MS250, MS171, and MS170. All of these saws have run tank after tank of this mix ration and I have had no problems. The only saw that I have that is a pain is the MS250. It starts right up, runs great, but shut it off and let it sit for more than 2 minute and it refuses to start and will flood out. You let it sit for half an hour or more, and it fires on the 2nd pull. Can't tell you how many times I have wanted to throw this saw across the yard! In my professional opinion of running chainsaws since I was in grade school( Im 48 now) running your saw,any saw, at 3/4 throttle is best unless you have it buried and under a full load, than you can run wide open. Also running the gas mixed richer seams to work well. All the saw manuals now want you to run hi octan and lean mixes or they want you to buy their Premixed alcohol free gas. That stuff is $$$. A quart can cost like $5-6. That is ok if you are home owner and use the saw once a year or so to cut up a couple of fallen limbs. Any one else mixes their gas. You run a saw wide open on high octane lean mixed gas and you are just asking to blow the saw up. Take it from me, run slower, richer and you for sure will be running longer. Like years longer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible unit I had 2 maples taken down in my back yard & needed a new chainsaw to do brush, limb cleanup, small type branches, average say 6 to 10 inches. Purchased new, ran at the store, Runnings when picked up, got it home, ran for about 3 hours, on & off, very little idle. Shut down for the day, tried to use it the next day, would not start after many pulls, chokes on & on. Took it back, fowled plug, put new plug in, great, took it home with several spare plugs since was stated maybe a break in period thing? Got it running the next day out, worked for about 45 minutes. Shut down to add fresh fuel, yes, mixed fuel, Would not restart. Put new plug in since that one was fowled too. Got it running for a while longer. Shut it down, went to restart, would not restart. Took it back to turn it back in, return it to get my money back. Was done messing with it. Was told the 10 plus other units on the rack there were all awaiting service due to running issues, all 170's. I bought a Stihl because are to be one of the best, but never again. acquired another from another, have been using it now for a week, no issues at all, starts every time. Sorry, this product sucked & did not need to spend many hundreds of dollars on a higher unit since this is for occasional use, not commercial use. Too bad.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Saw for Quick Jobs yet holds up well for long sessions My very thoughtful wife insisted I get another chainsaw as backup to my MS 251 Wood Boss, and as a bonding experience to allow my adult grandson to share work with me, so I chose the 170. (Recently, we had both saws running for 4 hours straight, stopping only to refuel.) As a 'homeowner' tending to more than a thousand 30-40 year old (pine, ash, elm, locust) trees, I find this 170 is really handy for delimbing trees downed by the 251, though it can also handle big stuff on its own. The thinner bar makes for a quick, clean cut with somewhat less effort, and the lighter weight is quite maneuverable compared to the 251. My only disappointment is the lack of true bucking teeth; these plastic bumps work OK but won't dig in like real teeth. All said, the 170 with its 16-inch bar is a great saw at a good price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Keep in mind only ran it for 10 minutes Doesn’t get enough oil to the chain dealer said it’s designed that was now. Ran it ten minutes the bar and chain started smoking and left black marks. Will not be getting a hat.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's the right saw for me, as far as size and weight, but it has run poorly from the beginning. Bought my MS 170 a year ago and I love the saw, as far as size and weight, but I hardly use it because it runs terribly. No power and doesn't want to idle properly. My son has the exact same saw and I've brought down 4 cords of wood this Spring...all with my son's MS 170. I took mine back to the dealer (Plaza Hardware in New Tripoli, PA) and complained that it had never been set-up properly. They just told me the air filter was dirty and, in their opinion, nothing was wrong with it. To this day, the the two saws run noticeably different when side-by-side. I have a retired friend who has cut wood professionally and he noticed how poorly my saw runs, compared to my son's MS170, so it's not just me. HELP!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw at a great price A great saw at a really low price performance much better than expected from a saw of this size I have larger saws but like this one because of its light weight and ease to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic little saw I have owned and used this saw for several years around my home and it has proved more than capable and is priced well. You can bury the bar and it cuts well. With a 16 inch bar I often have to work a log from both sides but anything under 32 inches (Which is pretty big) gets cut up without much fuss. It is also very light and manageable. A fantastic saw for a new sawyer. I recommend this saw to all my homeowner friends and family every chance I get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Buy Had this saw for a year now, and STIHL love it. Over the year, ive cut down, and up over 30 large trees for firewood. Most over 18" in diameter.....with the 16" bar. Also cleared 4 acres of 8'- 12' river privet. My only problem was about a month ago, it had trouble running at an idle. All I had to do was remove the spark screen from the muffler.....it was gummed up....do not bother trying to clean it, unless u like a headache. We can thank California for that issue. As long as you remove the spark screen, and clean out the air filter as needed, you will be just fine......and did I mention it is the lightest saw ive ever owned!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little saw! Bought this saw a few days ago to cut a house lot. Runs good for what you pay. My local dealer told me to try it out on some 12 inch stuff and i was surprised to see how well it did for what it is. Not the fastest saw to buy but does a great job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Saw Very easy to start and runs great most of the time. I have only used about 10 times but it does occasionally bough down and does not want to run consistently. Other than it choaking itself down occasionally it is a very good saw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Experience Purchased 10 days and used once and is now dead. I had on earmuffs and fired this 170 up for the first time and it roasted itself. The chain brake was on and I apparently did not pull the trigger to get it out of WOT the break roasted the saw. True Value said I had to pay to rebuild it I was like it was on for 60 seconds. No help it never made a single cut. true Value can not afford to make a 30 day exchange on saw. the saw never made a single cut. True Value in Salem VA

Rated 1 out of 5 by from First bad STIHL product! Do NOT buy I have three other Stihl products and love them for their reliability. When I needed a chainsaw, I did not hesitate to buy Stihl and it has been a nightmare. It will NOT start, took it back for warranty service four times now. I need to drive almost 60 miles to get 89 or 93 octane Ethanol free gas which is what the dealer recommended. I only have 87 octane ethanol free gas locally and that does not cut it.Gas has to be fresh, if three days old -- it will not start. I am following all the dealer's special tricks considered it does not have a primer bulb (EPA regulation?) and too short of a pull/start rope. Everytime I need to use it, it fails me and I need to take it in. Dealer tells me that it is common on this model... Junk!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never runs properly In the one year I’ve had this saw I’ve had to return it to the dealer for repairs twice and now it’s not working again and why should I pay another 1/2 the price to repair it again. Very disappointed in this chain saw especially because I was so excited to finally own a Stihl. Complete total junk! Sorry to be so negative about it but these are the facts.1) Impossible to start2) Chain refuses to keep proper tension3) Less powerful than el cheapo brand electric pole saw I own.4) Constantly cutting off.And no I’m not a Stihl hater I own 3 Stihl concrete saws and the Stihl Khombi system with several attachments which all are okay.
